Mentoring

“With careful guidance and mentorship, you will reach your highest self.”

Mentoring and supervision: understanding the difference

As counsellors and psychotherapist practitioners, all of us appreciate the importance of continuous professional development in our careers. However, while we understand the supervisory role in our practice, we may not have considered having a professional mentor.

Whilst clinical supervision is a mandatory necessity focused on ethical competence and client work, professional mentoring offers a distinct, empowering, and non-clinical form of support designed to elevate you from a competent practitioner to a strategically successful professional.

Why I enjoy mentoring

For me, mentoring is about providing guidance, support and advice in a non-judgemental, confidential space. In particular, I find it extremely rewarding to help therapists build their confidence and develop their own unique style. In addition, it is fulfilling that every conversation can be an opportunity to reflect, share insight and to grow.

Beyond clinical safety – how mentoring can help you

An experienced practitioner invests in mentoring because they are ready to move from simply sustaining their practice, to scaling up and maximising their impact. This often involves handling a range of complex challenges that are non-clinical: perhaps shifting from NHS work to a thriving private practice, diversifying to work with different types of clients, or increasing their professional visibility. The mentor acts as a strategic partner, offering the accumulated professional wisdom that supervision, by design, cannot provide.

Tangible career-focused outcomes: what you can expect

Mentoring delivers clear, measurable outcomes that define professional success.
I will work with you to understand your career goals, motivations and ultimately help you to establish a sustainable business model for your practice. Mentoring is about fostering a robust professional identity and confidence, enabling you to position yourself as a respected practitioner in your field.

How we work together

Mentoring is a highly focused and often short-term commitment compared to ongoing supervision. We typically work together for a specific period of time (e.g., 3 or 6 months) with a clear agenda for each session. This ensures we maintain momentum and focus on achieving your specific, measurable career goals. I am happy to tailor the frequency, the duration and your preferred time of day – with mentoring sessions available online or in-person – according to your requirements.

A few words about confidentiality…

All discussions regarding your career strategy, business finances, professional vulnerabilities, and goals are strictly confidential. I maintain this high level of trust to allow for open, honest, and high-level strategic planning. Please note: Mentoring sessions will not involve the discussion of specific, identifiable client material; that remains the domain of your clinical supervisor, ensuring we together maintain clear ethical boundaries.

Taking the next step

If you are ready to move beyond simply managing your caseload to actively building your practice, please get in touch; I offer a complimentary 15-minute call to ask specific questions about your career aspirations.
